The Sri Lankan captain won the toss and put India to bat. Captain Rohit Sharma was out early but the innings of Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli spoiled the game for Sri Lanka. Gill was out after playing an inning of 92 runs while Kohli was out after playing an inning of 88 runs. But this pair took the score by 4 runs to 196 runs.
Virat Kohli missed out on scoring his second century in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. He returned after playing an innings of 88 runs on 94 balls with the help of 11 fours. He once again missed out on equaling the record of 49 centuries made by great batsman Sachin Tendulkar in ODIs. He established many records during his innings of 88 runs.
Virat Kohli left Sachin behind in becoming the fastest player to complete 8000 runs in Asia. Virat accomplished this feat in 159 innings whereas Sachin accomplished it in 188 innings. He also overtook Sachin in terms of scoring 1000 runs in a calendar year the most number of times. Master Blaster did this 7 times while Kohli did this feat for the 8th time. He became the batsman (non-opener) who scored more than 50 runs the maximum number of times in World Cup history. Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara had done this 12 times while Kohli went ahead of him.
